Hayden Thorpe Shares Saintly New Single “Earthly Needs”

Hayden Thorpe (formerly of Wild Beasts) is set to release his debut solo album Diviner via Domino Records on May 24. Thorpe shared his latest single “Earthly Needs” Monday, following the release of “Love Crimes” and the album title track.

On “Earthly Needs,” Thorpe’s saintly vocals pour out in ribbon-like, cascading fashion as he mourns the often-irreversible nature of profound emotions. Thorpe sings on top of melancholy piano and pulsing synths, “How long will unlove take when it won’t obey / How long until I laugh at this / Until the abyss blows me a kiss.”

Diviner was recorded over the course of 2018 with close friend and long-time collaborator Leo Abrahams (Jon Hopkins, Brian Eno, David Byrne), and it’s a glaring departure from Thorpe’s previous work with Wild Beasts. Per a press release, Diviner contains “a unique identity indebted to Thorpe’s life course, an interest in the idea of “digital mysticism” and an unusual philosophical depth.”
