HGTV and Paste Present The Stages on Sixth Day 1 Recap and Photos

Yesterday afternoon HGTV and Paste kicked off the first of our four SXSW day parties at the Stages on Sixth, and we didn’t waste any time, diving right into the great music with an enthusiastic set from The Lone Bellow. Their gorgeous country harmonies were the perfect start to the day, shaking awake those who may have remained a little bleary-eyed at 11:30 a.m. after the previous night’s revelry.

After The Lone Bellow left the crowd reeling, people poured outside to check out the day’s first set on the outdoor stage, CR Smith. Smith, the winner of our Be The New Sound of HGTV songwriting contest, performed new material, giving those who only knew him from his House Hunters International song “This Way Home” a taste of what he’s really like as an artist.

Later in the afternoon, Foxygen completely lived up to all the hype surrounding them, delivering a high-energy set (despite apologies from lead singer Sam France for their lack of intensity—if this is the band running on empty, we can’t wait to see what they can do with a full tank). Mac DeMarco set the outdoor stage abuzz before Dawes brought the mellow inside, turning in the kind of lovely harmonies and thoughtful lyrics we love them for and performing a few cuts from their upcoming record.

It’s always a good sign when a band’s crowd has quadrupled in size by the end of their set, and that was the case with The Allah-Las. Their throwback, psych-rock sound drew more and more people the longer they played—and rightfully so. Matthew E. White kept the good vibes flowing, before Marnie Stern tore up our outdoor stage and Sweden’s Shout Out Louds closed things out inside.
