Jimmy Chamberlin Complex – Life Begins Again

From the ashes of Smashing Pumpkins and Zwan comes Life Begins Again, the debut from Jimmy Chamberlin Complex. On this joint venture between drummer Chamberlin and L.A.-based songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Billy Mohler, the former adapts to the latter’s jazz-influenced style. With layered keyboard tracks and slightly over-the-top drumming, the music feels ethereal and atmospheric—perfect background music for a trendy restaurant.

Most of Life Begins Again runs together in a sea of banality. Devoid of appealing melodies, a distinct songwriting style and substantive lyrics, the album would work better if purely instrumental. The only exception—and the group’s best candidate for a single—is the loping, heartfelt “Loki Cat,” featuring a cameo from Billy Corgan. Reminiscent of Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, this track will leave you longing for a new Smashing Pumpkins record.
