Daily Dose: Kacey Johansing, “Hold Steady”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the one song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

Kacey Johansing, formerly of Yesway, released her third solo album, The Hiding, June 2nd on NightBloom Records, a label she co-founded with Real Estate’s Alex Bleeker and musician James Manson. The singer-songwriter was living in the sleepy, hippie Bay Area beach town of Bolinas through most of the album’s conception and recently made the move down to LA. Much of The Hiding — which features members of Real Estate, Vetiver, Fruit Bats, et al. — centers around Johansing’s geographical flux and the love and solace that came and went with it.

“Hold Steady” is just one of many standouts from the record and it sees Johansing showcasing her soothing voice atop lovely riffs that feel like a gentle stroll down the hazy Northern California seaside. She packs much emotion alongside 70’s rock nostalgia and it works on every level. We’re crazy about this album and Johansing is the definition of a star on the rise.
