Leon Bridges Might Have Found the One on New Single “Beyond”

Leon Bridges has been on a crusade to bring R&B back to its roots, one new song at a time. This is especially true of his latest single, “Beyond,” released Friday, just weeks before the May 4 debut of Good Thing.

The lovers’ ode follows the same traditional R&B approach with a modern twist, just like Bridges’ previous singles, floor-stomper “Bad Bad News” and the soulful “Bet Ain’t Worth the Hand.” With “Beyond,” the production gives a neo-soul vibe with acoustic guitars and throwback percussion while adding in the modern touch of a bass-heavy beat. Bridges’ soulful vocals feel at home on the production as he glides over the track, hitting every peak and valley with his layered background vocals.

With such a heartwarming production, the “Beyond” lyrics seem to signal Bridges’ hesitance to say his significant other is “the one,” despite all signs pointing in that direction. “Oh me, oh my, I can’t explain / She might just be my everything … So do you think I’m being foolish if I don’t rush in?” Bridges croons in the bridge before heading into the final chorus: “I … I’m scared to death that she might be it / That the love is real / That the shoe might fit / She might just be my everything and beyond / Space and time in the afterlife / Will she have my kids / Will she be my wife / She might just be my everything and beyond.”

Good Thing was executive produced by Bridges, his longtime collaborators Niles City Sound and hit producer Ricky Reed (Mary Lambert, Bomba Estereo), with the goal of taking Bridges’ traditional sound of Coming Home in a more modern R&B direction. The album is available for preorder here.

Along with the preorder and new single, Bridges has announced he will be touring North America this summer, starting June 9 in Irving, Texas at The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory. He will be supported by Jon Batiste and Stay Human, singer-songwriter Masego and Texas trio Khruangbin. The tour will begin after he finishes his run with Harry Styles. Tickets are available here.

The more songs Bridges releases, the bigger the anticipation for his new album becomes, but so far, everything has been great. Listen to “Beyond” along with checking out his upcoming tour dates below.
