The new single from Nashville-based singer-songwriter Liza Anne is “Devotion,” an explosive break-up anthem inspired by Patti Smith’s short story of the same name. Liza Anne’s first new release of 2019, following her 2018 breakout Fine But Dying, arrives ahead of her fall tour alongside Lucy Dacus, which begins in Louisville, Ky., on Oct. 9.
Produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen (M83, Tegan & Sara), “Devotion” poured right out of Liza Anne, who wrote it in just 10 minutes. “This song is my fight for myself,” she says in a statement, and fight she does: “Devotion” rope-a-dopes the listener, with Anne asserting, “I like the things I like / and that’s alright,” over muted power chords and buttoned-up percussion, only to stop the song cold and shout, “I’ll do anything for her now, she’s my longest love / Hey!”—that’s when “Devotion” comes out swinging, an explosion of crashing cymbals and glammed-up synths, those guitars unleashed and landing body blow after body blow. Meanwhile, in the track’s Josh Gilligan-directed video, Liza Anne’s face fills the frame as she rediscovers herself, demanding, “Devotion / Return to me / Who I was before I was in love.” The last sound we hear is the singer inhaling deeply—a breath of fresh air.
Having already performed alongside the likes of Kacey Musgraves, Ray LaMontagne and Paramore, Liza Anne has a big fall ahead, including 20 North American shows with Dacus, followed by 10 U.S. headlining shows of her own.
