Luce – Luce

The San Francisco band Luce strikes me as the latest in what will no doubt be an almost endless succession of Dave Matthews and John Mayer acolytes—purveyors of tasteful, non-threatening Lite Rock that will appeal to frat boys and soccer moms alike. It’s not really my cup of chamomile tea, but what they do, they do well. Mixing folk, rock, jazz and funk influences, lead singer-songwriter Tom Luce and his bandmates create an appealing, hook-laden album of mid-tempo tunes. To his credit, Luce has crafted a remarkably consistent album. There are no real low points, and most of these songs hold up well to repeated listening. “Long Way Down” and “Good Day,” with their giant hooks, sound like potential hits on “Sunny” radio stations, while “In the Middle There” and “Sunniest of Weekends” will surely get the suburban kids up and swaying in the aisles. It’s all pleasant stuff, but the most noteworthy songs here are the unnervingly beautiful “Electric Chair,” a John Lennon-influenced ballad that finds parallels between domestic bliss and a death sentence, and the Magical Mystery Tour-era Beatles psychedelic knockoff (sitars, no less!) “Bring Her In.” There’s a bit of an edge there and, naturally, those are the two songs on the album that have no chance of becoming hits.
