Some musicians spend decades learning, sculpting and honing their craft, sweating over every note to achieve excellence. Lucy Dacus is not one of those musicians. The 21-year-old Virginia native recorded her debut album in a single session before no less than 20 labels entered a bidding war. Listening to the assured, bristling rock of the LP, No Burden, it’s not hard to see why. Standout track “I Don’t Wanna Be Funny Anymore” revels in clever, wry lyrics festooned around steadfast rock hooks. The rest of the album maintains that tight coil of smart, considered songcraft that begs repeat listens. It’s immaculately seasoned for a debut effort, and easily slid into Paste’s top ten albums of 2016. Live, Dacus elevates her musicality to an intimate level that doesn’t sacrifice the pure skill evident in her studio output. Photographer Maddie McGarvey caught Dacus during her stopover in Columbus while supporting Hamilton Leithauser for some the behind-the-scenes shots. Lucy Dacus is on tour in the US throughout February.
