Marissa Nadler has shared the video for her song “I Can’t Listen to Gene Clark Anymore,” recorded live with Sharon Van Etten. The song is off Nadler’s forthcoming album For My Crimes, out Sept. 28 through Sacred Bones and Bella Union.

“Gene Clark” is a songbird’s lament, the sort of low-country ballad that would feel equally at home next to Mazzy Star as it would next to Joni Mitchell. In this live-recorded version, Nadler’s breathy voice is given the chance to shine, free from the ethereal studio effects of the original, and the song is more remarkable for it. Van Etten’s background vocals are merely hinted at here, like bunting gently draped over the simple figures Nadler spins.

The song is an interrogation of distance and absence, much like the album itself. “For My Crimes stares down the dark realization that love may not be enough to keep two people together through distance and differing needs,” Nadler said in a statement. “Gene Clark” feels like that. It feels like a reckoning of the kind of mini-breakups you have after the big one—breaking up with a sweater, or a song, or a memory, because they remind you of someone else.
