Live Photos: Australian Indie Pop Trio Middle Kids Storm Brooklyn

Two singles and an EP have been all its taken for Australia’s Middle Kids to achieve a buzz most guitar-driven indie bands spend years concocting. The trio—vocalist/guitarist Hannah Joy, guitarist Tim Fitz and drummer Harry Day—spin addictive rock with melodies that linger for days. Elton John took note and plugged them on his Rocket Hour radio program and it’s not hard to hear why: Joy’s voice can scale from a heaven-bound soprano to lower registers and the singles recall the assured, honed songcraft of Juliana Hatfield and Fleetwood Mac. The group is currently in the midst of a tour between the land down under and the UK that wraps in May and picks up again in the US this August. But Paste photographer Drew Reynolds was able to join them for their Brooklyn layover last week at Baby’s All Right, shooting their soundcheck, sold-out show and a few portraits.
