Mofro – Lochloosa

With its dirty, swampy groove, it’s no surprise that Mofro’s JJ Grey and Daryl Hance hail from Jacksonville, Fla. They’re the kind of guys who wear trucker hats without irony. It’s also not surprising they’ve found a kindred spirit in Robert Randolph, whose Dare Records is behind this Swampland imprint. And with that pedigree, it’s equally unsurprising that Lochloosa is stanky, funky, bluesy fun. Mofro’s closest musical peers may actually be the North Mississippi Allstars, but while Luther Dickinson and Co. focus on extended hill-country jams (and, more recently, hip-hop and pop), Grey and Hance keep things tight, especially on the soul-based “The Long Way” and “Fireflies.” They also rock out a la Little Feat on “Dirt Floor Cracker” and “How Junior Got His Head Put Out,” a song about being on the receiving end of a parking-lot ass whupppin’. If there’s no juke joint near you, Lochloosa is the next best thing.
