Live Photos: Behind the Scenes with Nada Surf

There are two populations of people in this world: one that fondly remembers Nada Surf’s 1996 power-pop hit “Popular” and may or may not be cognizant that the band has released a stream of albums over two plus decades after, astonishingly excellent in their songcraft and sheer consistency. The second group is more than aware of Nada’s eight-LP discography (including the covers album) and considers the ignorance of the first group musical heresy. They’re also aware of the following: Let Go is one of the finest rock albums in the history of rock music; a live version of “Blonde on Blonde” can move the most apathetic soul to tears; and Matthew Caws’ soaring voice knows no sonic boundaries. They’re one of the few bands that magically maintains the same caliber through the course of six presidential terms.

The touring group consists of Caws, percussionist/vocalist Ira Elliot, touring bassist Daniel Brummel and guitarist Doug Gillard, who’s also straddling duties with Guided By Voices and new project ESP Ohio. And they continue to sound amazing. The group is currently in the Midwest, but will soon be heading across the Atlantic for a spate of European dates, playing tracks off their latest release You Know Who You Are. Sean Edgar photographed the group’s soundcheck and concert last month at The A&R Music Bar in Columbus.
