British newcomer NANCY has shared new visuals for their new song “I’m Not Getting Sober, I’m Just Getting Older (Helluva Guy)” exclusively via Paste. The song is taken from their 2018 debut EP, Mysterious Visions, out now on Cannibal Hymns and B3SCI Records.
Bolstered by spring-loaded guitars and fuzzed-out vocals, “I’m Not Getting Sober, I’m Just Getting Older (Helluva Guy)” is the song you want playing if you’re being chased by a horde of swift ninjas or sirens-blazing cop cars, and you need that extra bit of stamina and suave adroitness to evade them in style. The song’s manic, overwrought visuals complement the lyrics, which address the difficult, long-term battle to preserve a healthy relationship with alcohol.
NANCY, who also created the video’s animation, said of the song, “As time ticks on, I can’t tell if I’m getting more boring or just better at handling my booze. Helluva Guy is my own intervention on myself. I probably have a drinking problem and I’m not afraid to admit it. I created and animated this video myself, I chopped up old magazines from the ‘50s and ‘60s and stuck them back together in my own way. It’s an explosion of colour and life, and is as chaotic and disorganized as a man in the grips of a drinking binge.”
Paste recently featured another EP cut, “French Cinnamon,” with Justin Kamp writing, “It sounds a bit like a long-lost prom song from the era of baby-blue suits, if the cassette it was on was dug up Jumanji-style and given to some pedal-heads to fiddle with.”
