Watch Nathaniel Rateliff Perform Songs from In Memory Of Loss on This Day in 2010

Back in 2010, Paste named a young Nathaniel Rateliff one of the best new solo artists of that year, alongside Ty Segall, Eli “Paperboy” Reed and Lissie. Fast forward almost a decade, and Rateliff has become a mainstay here at Paste with his band The Night Sweats sitting firmly among modern folk royalty.

On this day in 2010, Rateliff played a solo set at Codfish Hollow Barn in Maquoketa, Iowa. It was the final night of Rateliff’s tour with Delta Spirit, Ra Ra Riot, Free Energy and Pearly Gate Music—all old friends and band buddies. You can watch Rateliff perform three cuts from his 2010 solo album, In Memory of Loss, that night below—”A Lamb on the Stone,” “You Should’ve Seen the Other Guy” and “Early Spring Till.”

Paste wrote of Rateliff in 2010, “Nathaniel Rateliff’s newest LP In Memory of Loss rings with the ease, tenderness and lightness of heart that often mark a new romance. And rightly so: Much of the album was written to woo a woman. Ambling guitar riffs and light touches of piano sound like aimless strolls through town; Rateliff’s rich voice and his bandmates’ textured harmonies sound like long and comfortable conversations, and the songwriter’s occasional raw vocal rattle sounds like those sweet moments of when new lovers are bold to share hard truths—family secrets, old friends, regrets—and ask big questions.”

Watch Rateliff perform “A Lamb on the Stone,” “You Should’ve Seen the Other Guy” and “Early Spring Till” below.
