Watch Of Montreal’s Kaleidoscopic “Plateau Phase/No Careerism No Corruption” Video

Of Montreal have shared another striking single and video from their forthcoming 15th album, White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood, out on March 9 via Polyvinyl. The dreamy, beat-driven “Plateau Phase/No Careerism No Corruption” follows lead single “Paranoiac Intervals/Body Dysmorphia,” which Kevin Barnes and company released in late January.

The new single’s video, directed by Christina Eleni Schneider and Clayton Rychlik, has a loose and lively feel, managing to feel both whimsical and menacing at turns. Barnes sings and shimmies amidst kaleidoscopic imagery, a phantasmagoria of light and color.

“If we put our ear to the ceiling, we can hear the government breathing / We can hear the dark matter breeding,” Barnes croons, his lyrics tugging at the loose threads of our reality. “If we put our ear to the ceiling, we can hear the multiverse seeding / We can hear the simulation wheezing.”

The ever-verbose Barnes explained the song’s origins as follows:

“Plateau Phase/No Careerism No Corruption” started out as a song I wrote for Janelle Monáe last summer called “Fucked In Your Driveway.” We worked on it together one magical day in her laboratory at Wondaland but nothing really happened with it, so I reworked it into something very different for my own album. Lyrically, I pulled inspiration from Multiverse Theory, the writings of Wilhelm Reich and the economist Guy Standing, Eastern European party culture, and Bluets by Maggie Nelson, as well as my burgeoning new love affair with a woman of mystery and magic. We shot the video in Atlanta at an art/performance space called Rowdy Dowdy one chilly winter day this January. It was directed/edited by Christina Eleni Schneider and costumed by Taber Lathrop, Elizabeth Wheeler and David Barnes and I wore an outfit created by AC Carter.

Just one day after the March 9 release of White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood, Of Montreal head out on a spring U.S. tour. The band will criss-cross the States throughout March, April and May, so now’s as good a time as any to catch their surreal live theatrics.
