Why Was Grace from Clean Bandit’s Shirt Censored on the BBC Broadcast of One Love Manchester?

Confusion arose when Grace Chatto, one third of Clean Bandit, had her shirt blurred out during the group’s video appearance at the One Love Manchester benefit concert. The censorship had viewers wondering if the garment displayed something offensive—perhaps a swear word not suitable for television or a vulgar picture.

On the contrary, Chatto’s shirt was a display of political involvement, depicting the Nike logo with the name “Corbyn” underneath in favor of the Labour Party member who will be challenging Prime Minister Theresa May in the upcoming general election.

BBC is now in hot water after choosing to pixelate the design in an effort to keep the concert a politically impartial event. The station isn’t the only medium facing scrutiny for censorship; just last week, radio stations in the U.K. refused to play a song that criticized May.

The concert, which featured emotionally charged performances from Miley Cyrus, Liam Gallagher, Ariana Grande and many more, was otherwise devoid of political messages, and has raised over $12.9 million thus far for victims of the May 22 terrorist attack at Manchester Arena.
