The keyword behind festival season 2017 has been monotony. The same handful of headliners—no matter how talented—have dominated most outings. Pitchfork dove into the numbers last April and confirmed that, yes, if you went to a music event this summer, chances are Chance the Rapper or Lorde or The XX would be there to greet you, no matter the geography or personality of the event. (There are a few exceptions.)
So when Panorama Music Festival busts out Frank Ocean—who returned to the stage for the first time after three years last June in Denmark—that’s cause for celebration. And even if none of the other performers quite had that sense of scarcity, the first day of the Randall’s Island jam felt pretty damn special. Solange, Tyler, The Creator, Future Islands, MGMT and Spoon punctuated a day that not only felt big and accessible, but held its own eccentric DNA. Check out photographer DeShaun Craddock’s photos in the gallery above and check back tomorrow for more coverage of Panorama Music Festival 2017.
