Last Saturday, Columbus Theatre in Providence, R.I. celebrated the one-year anniversary of its transformation from shell of the past to hub of a vibrant music scene with Revival 2, a night of—what else—music, revelry, and family. With three stages to choose from, one in the old-timey, functioning barber shop out front, one upstairs balcony, and one in the large central room, the night featured fifteen staggered bands to choose from. Highlights included the debut of new Deer Tick side project Happiness living up to their name, Columbus kingpins the Low Anthem flying – and crashing – a surveillance drone during their special-guest-laden set, which included original member Jocie Adams, the return of Anais Mitchell after a baby-bearing hiatus, the Felice Brothers in general, and a post-show, glitter-exploding jam session that lasted almost until the sun came up.

Run by a cooperative, the Columbus has come a long way in just a year, building a scene around it that has become more an extended family than anything else, no small feat in this day of nonchalance and too-cool hipsterism. Goes to show what a little blood, a little sweat, and a whole lot of love can do. Here’s to many more.
