Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason to Play Pre-Dark Side of the Moon Material on New North American Tour

Early next year, Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets will cross the Atlantic for their first North American tour.

The recently formed group features the Pink Floyd drummer alongside longtime Floyd touring bassist Guy Pratt, Spandau Ballet guitarist Gary Kemp, guitarist Lee Harris and keyboardist Dom Beken. The band launched their inaugural tour in Europe in 2018, playing shows devoted to Floyd’s pre-Dark Side of the Moon material, including The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn and the group’s namesake A Saucerful Of Secrets.

“With the help of some like-minded friends, I have embarked on a voyage of discovery of the music that was the launchpad of Pink Floyd and my working life,” says Mason in a statement. “It seems too early to retire, and I missed the interaction with other musicians.”

Most of the group’s repertoire comes from Pink Floyd’s Syd Barrett era, and several of the songs have not been played live in decades. One of the only songs in their set that gets regular radio airplay is “One of These Days,” off of 1971’s Meddle.

The tour begins on March 12, 2019, in Vancouver, B.C., and wraps up on April 22, 2019, in Washington, D.C. Tickets go on sale early next month.

The shows mark Mason’s first performances in North America since the close of Pink Floyd’s Division Bell Tour in the summer of 1994, apart from a handful of guest appearances with Roger Waters in 2006.

Mason was inspired to form Saucerful of Secrets after working on the Pink Floyd museum exhibit Pink Floyd: Their Mortal Remains. “I really enjoyed working on it,” Mason told Rolling Stone. “But at the end, I felt like a national monument, that it was all about ancient history. I thought, ‘I like this, but not as much as what I remember,’ which was playing drums with like-minded people on stage.”

Tickets for most shows go on sale Monday, Nov. 5, at 10 a.m. local time, with others set for Friday, Nov. 9, at 10 a.m. local time. Find the full slate below, beneath a 1987 Pink Floyd performance from the Paste archives.
