Beach Slang had the right idea for its Riot Fest 12:40 slot—the second earliest in the day. To thank attendees for waking up (relatively) early after Queens of the Stone Age’s whiplash headlining slot the night before, a band ambassador joyously tossed out Dunkin’ Donuts alongside the low-fi Philly group’s melodic grooves. That act of sugary goodwill set the tone for a day slightly less ferocious and more huggable than the industrial/punk melange of Friday and Saturday. Even headliners Jawbreaker—their first show in more than two decades—offered the less abrasive, more melodic end of the punk spectrum. That description also proved true for preceding sets from Paramore, Best Coast, Minus the Bear and Cap’N Jazz—another longshot revival. Photographer Sarah Hess returns with another gallery, also featuring TV on the Radio, M.I.A., Dinosaur Jr. and Downtown Boys—but check back tomorrow for her portrait series.
