Queens of the Stone Age just wrapped a sneering, sassy rockabilly-tinged record that emphasizes groove over grunge. But for their headlining slot at Riot Fest Day Two, Josh Homme and crew reached back into a labyrinth catalog that spans stoner rock, metal and psychedelic to unleash some of their most corrosive anthems. Starting with Songs For the Deaf opener “You Think I Ain’t Worth a Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionaire” and following with early single “Feel Good Hit of the Summer,” the band offered a concussive string of insidious riffs and staccato snare hits, climaxing with set-closer “Songs for the Deaf.”

Other performers embraced that same confrontational attitude. Take Peaches, who could well be our generation’s most unorthodox sex educator. Flanked by dancers dressed in what can only be described as vagina headdresses, the Canadian electro provocateur played a line of danceable, sexually charged tunes, including her 2015 banger (sorry) “Vaginoplasty.” The day offered a slew of similarly memorable shows, including the perpetually-epic At the Drive-In, punk veterans Bad Brains and slacker gods FIDLAR.
