Rock on the Range is the first serious reminder that we live in a world without Chris Cornell, the Soundgarden frontman whose cathartic wails defined the ‘90s grunge movement alongside Kurt Cobain, Billy Corgan and Eddie Vedder. Soundgarden was set to headline the annual Columbus rock festival, but his passing last Thursday in Detroit cast the event as an informal memorial to the iconic vocalist. Various bands covered a slew of Soundgarden tracks; Bush offered their rendition of “Black Hole Sun,” Live (appearing with all of their original members) jammed out to “I Am the Highway,” while Stone Sour played “Outshined.” That final song held a special irony, as torrential rain and lightning postponed gates till 7 PM. Paste photographer Amy Harris captured the first somber day of the fest, which also included performances from Thrice, Norma Jean, Chevelle and many more. Check back tomorrow and Monday for more coverage from the weekend.
