Daily Dose: Rose Droll, “Boy Bruise”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

San Francisco-based musician Rose Droll has shared a new track, “Boy Bruise,” from her forthcoming debut album Your Dog, out on Nov. 16 via Father/Daughter Records and Double Denim.

Following the album’s first single “Hush,” “Boy Bruise” opens with Droll’s siren-like vocal drone before she breaks into an atmospheric rap. The surrounding synths and beats lull you into a fleeting, hazy retreat from reality as she sings of visions and modes of escape to cope with life’s bitterness and monotony. On Your Dog, Droll evades most typical musical classifications, but you’ll revel in the warmth of her flowing poetry and colossal artistic ambition.

“I recorded ‘Boy Bruise’ while alone in a cabin in Big Bear,” explains Droll. “There were no neighbors around so I got to be as loud as I wanted around the clock. So I experimented with screaming into an SM57 for the first time, and I tracked a ton of yelling and screaming and growling for hours into the night, and all I ended up keeping was this extremely small quadruple sixteenth note part that lasts like one second.”

Droll self-recorded and self-produced Your Dog in a duplex in L.A.’s Highland Park and in a cabin in Big Bear. After the release of last year’s largely acoustic EP, Photograph, her debut album consists of 10 tracks from the last three years. She plays every instrument on the record, including guitar, piano, drums, bass, cello and glockenspiel.
