Shana Cleveland Parodies Anti-Drug PSAs in Her “Face of the Sun” Video

Shana Cleveland is quickly setting herself apart as a queen of the weird and wonderful. Thursday, the La Luz frontwoman shared her trippy self-directed music video for “Face of the Sun” (previously featured as a Daily Dose on Paste) ahead of her solo album Night of the Worm Moon’s release via Hardly Art on Friday, April 5.

The video is described in a statement as an “homage to ‘70s-era anti-drug PSAs.” Cleveland and a couple friends, all decked out in retro garb (and some of the best-worst wigs we’ve ever seen), all get stoned and stare glassy-eyed at a cat as reality disintegrates around them. The small details used to indicate their strung-out state (a wooden model hand replacing a real one, overdrawn lipstick) are subtle, unnerving and just plain funny. Of course, nothing competes with the melting face, which just screams “This is your brain on drugs!” The vintage trappings and surreal aesthetics are the perfect companions for Cleveland’s entrancing psych-folk sound.

Watch the video for “Face of the Sun” below and see when Cleveland is playing near you here.
