Hear Shania Twain “Rock This Country!” on This Day in 1999

Shania Twain is the long-reigning queen of pop-country.

Yes, I’m aware that Taylor Swift exists, and she did indeed supply many a fabulous country-crossover before making the switch to full-on revenge-pop, from the twinkly innocence of Fearless to the more mature Red. But no does sparkly twang like Shania. She did it first, and she set the bar high.

The Canadian country singer had just one album behind her when she achieved her first hit. “The Woman In Me (Needs The Man In You),” from her second album The Woman In Me, climbed the country charts and obtained status as a crossover hit after its release in 1995. But it was Twain’s third album, 1997’s Come On Over, that propelled her to superstar status, in the country world and beyond. Come On Over harbors the Twain trifecta: “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!,” “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and, her first Top 10 hit, “You’re Still the One,” all of which she played on this day (Nov. 14) in 1999 at a concert in Texas, which you can hear below.

When Come On Over was released, you didn’t need to be a hardcore country fan with a collection of Johnny Cash records or Dolly Parton memorabilia to appreciate Twain’s fortified, countryfied pop goodness—you just needed to be a radio listener. Everything about “You’re Still the One” was far-reaching. The music video, a moody, single-hue study in blue, was a VH1 staple. Even at the time of this writing it has more than 116 million views on YouTube. Twain’s story of beating the odds and making it work was, and still is, irresistible. She had a hit on her hands faster than you can say “Look how far we’ve come my baby.”

In addition to “You’re Still the One,” “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and the always anthemic “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!,” Twain played other Come On Over standouts “Honey, I’m Home,” “Rock This Country!” and the title track during this show at the now-nonexistent Texas Stadium in 1999. If there’s exclamatory punctuation in a song’s title, that’s a sure sign the crowd responded along those same lines—from the very first bars of “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” to the end, the audience is berserk.
