Sharon Van Etten Announces Remastered Reissue of Her Debut Album

Sharon Van Etten hasn’t come out with a new LP since 2004’s Are We There, but now she’s returning, aptly revisiting the album that started it all. She’s announced the reissue of her debut effort, 2009’s because i was in love. Craig Silvey remixed and Joe Lambert remastered the tracks to turn the original album into (it was) because i was in love.

“It was an innocent and beautiful record, which some of my newer fans may not even know about,” Van Etten said. “This seemed like the perfect time to remix and remaster it, and give it a new life.”

Van Etten also shared the opening track, “I Wish I Knew.” As stripped-down and pure as the original, the track drowns sorrows in the singer’s raw, unvarnished croon. Her voice carries its weight so well that only rudimentary guitar strums are needed to complement the melancholy lyrics.

Van Etten sang the song when she appeared as Rachel in Netflix’s The OA, marking her acting debut. In the recent past, she has also performed on Twin Peaks: The Return, wrote and recorded the score for feature film Strange Weather, and made guest appearances on various releases for Spoon, Lee Ranaldo and Michael Cera.

The reissue will be out as a Vinyl Me Please exclusive and through Van Etten’s shop, as well as digitally, on Nov. 17. It will also include two bonus tracks, both of which were previously released on a 2010 EP.
