Sia Announces New Album, Full-Length Musical Coming in 2019

Fans have been anticipating the follow-up to Sia’s seventh studio album, This Is Acting, which contained singles “Cheap Thrills” and “The Greatest,” since 2016. Now, as revealed in a Christmas Day Twitter exchange, it appears the singer-songwriter/performance artist has announced that the wait will soon be over—2019 is going to be a big year for Sia.

Responding to a fan’s question, Sia confirmed both an album and feature-length musical for the coming year. Though details weren’t given for the album, it’s a safe bet to guess that muse and now regular contributor to Sia’s visuals, former Dance Moms star Maddie Ziegler, will return for the new project.

Sia and Ziegler first worked together on the former’s music videos for “Chandelier” and “Elastic Heart,” with the pair continuing to work together on visuals accompanying the pop star’s work in the years since. Sia’s directorial debut—the musical previously mentioned—is titled Music, and will star the teen dancer alongside Kate Hudson and Leslie Odom Jr. The musical is three years in the making and we now know, per Rolling Stone, that it will follow a story the singer wrote with author Dallas Clayton focusing on “an autistic child who comes under the care of her sober drug-dealing sister.” The child and sister will be played by Ziegler and Hudson, respectively.

Though it’s been a while since her last studio album, Sia has kept busy in 2018—from writing songs for Everytown and Vox Lux to working with Diplo in LSD. Check out a video from that last project below.
