Steve Gunn Shares “Vagabond” Video, Announces U.S. Tour Dates

Steve Gunn has shared a new video for his track “Vagabond,” taken from his forthcoming album, The Unseen in Between, out on Jan. 18 through Matador. Gunn has also announced another leg of North American tour dates set for April and May. The new video follows his previously released singles, “New Moon” and “Stonehurst Cowboy.” Read our recent interview with Gunn about his forthcoming album here.

“Vagabond” is named after Agnes Varda’s 1985 French drama film of the same name—one of Gunn’s all-time favorite movies. Featuring vocal harmonies from Gunn’s frequent tour-mate Meg Baird, “Vagabond” captures the unglamorous, unpredictable shared experiences of vagrants and social outcasts. Gunn likens the stoic gaze of struggling artists and graveyard workers to that of a stray cat. Gunn sings with Baird, “Vacancy in a burned-out flat / You’re a empty stare from a vagrant cat, you’re a vagabond / Suitcase is packed and you’ll move along.”

The video was directed by Jason Evans and its black-and-white color scheme channels the melancholic demeanor of the song’s subjects, while its use of shadows represents the ignored lives of those on the fringes. The intimate video allows Gunn’s minimal, engrossing guitar work to shine without taking the limelight away from the track’s characters.
