Sufjan Stevens to Perform “Mystery of Love” at 90th Academy Awards

Indie-folk visionary Sufjan Stevens will perform his Oscar-nominated “Mystery of Love” at the 90th Academy Awards next Sunday, March 3. The gorgeous song, one of Stevens’ three contributions to the soundtrack of Luca Guadagnino’s Best Picture-nominated drama Call Me By Your Name, is also nominated for the Best Original Song Oscar.

The Oscar nod is Stevens’ first, and is one of four for Call Me By Your Name, which is also nominated for Timothée Chalamet’s lead performance and James Ivory’s adapted screenplay, along with the aforementioned Best Picture nod. The film, starring Chalamet and Armie Hammer as young men who fall in love during an idyllic summer in the Italian countryside, was based on the 2007 André Aciman novel of the same name.

Mystery of Love,” though overlooked by many, was one of the most delicate and arresting songs released in 2017. Stevens released a music video for the track in January, composed of clips from Call Me By Your Name and footage from the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples.

Stevens’ song is up against some stiff competition in the Best Original Song category, including “Mighty River” from Mudbound, “Remember Me” from Coco, “Stand Up for Something” from Marshall and “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman. Here’s hoping Stevens pulls off the win—“Mystery of Love” most definitely deserves it.

The 90th Oscars, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, air on Sunday, March 4 starting at 6:30 p.m. EST. See the complete list of 2018 nominees here and revisit Stevens’ “Mystery of Love” video below.
