Daily Dose: Taft, “Winters”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

Taft is the project of Austin-based singer/songwriter and former Lomelda member Taft Mashburn, and they’ve shared their latest single “Winters,” along with its music video, premiering exclusively at Paste. “Winters” is taken from their forthcoming third album, Goodnight, Plum, out on Feb. 22 via Cosmic Dreamer, and it follows their previously released single, “Rooms.”

There’s a graceful majesty and arresting melancholia to “Winters.” It won’t take very long for Mashburn’s striking falsetto and aching keyboards to seep into your inner core. His fragile croon is soul-stirring enough on its own, but the addition of a ravishing web of piano, atmospheric keyboards and off-the-wall percussion raises the track’s emotional impact at least tenfold.

The riel Sturchio-directed video features Mashburn wandering through a wooded landscape for deep contemplation and a chance to reconnect with nature. “Winters” is defined by nothing if not its humanity, and this video’s intimate perspective and therapeutic, earthy color palette convey that painfully gorgeous humanity.

Watch the video for “Winters” exclusively at Paste below. You can preorder a vinyl copy of Goodnight, Plum here.
