Listen to Temples’ Psychedelic New Single, “Certainty”

Music News Temples

Temples, who were a Paste Best of What’s Next pick in 2013, have shared the lead single, “Certainty,” off their forthcoming, as-of-yet-untitled sophomore album, due out in early 2017 via Fat Possum Records.

The English psych-rock quartet released their debut LP Sun Structures in 2014, immediately garnering a big following and high praise, drawing comparisons to other neo-psych groups like Tame Impala. The album was named Rough Trade Records “Album of the Year” in 2014.

Temples frontman James Bagshaw said of the new single:

When writing the melody for ‘Certainty,’ I wanted to create something with almost an eerie, early Disney vibe, something playful and harmonious, but with a dark twist. Producing the song was as much about layering as it was about sparseness—the verses needed to reveal the thumping motion of the bass and the reflective lyrics, and the melody had to be paired with the right ambience. The chorus was approached in an opposite way, layer after layer, thickening the sound. There’s a blend between moog bass, and actual bass, and the song switches between synthetic and analogue sounds throughout. The guitar mirrors the synth, and visa versa.

Details about their forthcoming LP have yet to be announced, but the new single signals a strong return for the band. Listen to it below, and find their newly announced fall tour dates beneath that.
