Ever since meeting as high-school students in tiny Traverse City, Mich., cellist Katie Larson and violinist Sav Buist have been making music together. Both grew up in musical families, with professional pianists for fathers and vocalists for mothers, and their shared influences bounced among classical, jazz, bluegrass, country, alt-rock and the obscure.

Dubbing themselves The Accidentals, Buist and Larson recorded and released a pair of independent albums in 2012 and 2013, both of which hewed close to their orchestral roots. From there, ?the group played more than a thousand live shows, including supporting slots with like-minded acts like Martin Sexton, Andrew Bird, The Wailers and Joan Baez. With all that practice under their belt, Larson and Buist have finally released their most compelling work to date, Odyssey. Together with drummer Michael Dause, the band weclomed such collaborators as acoustic guitar maestra Kaki King, bassist Dominic John Davis, Carbon Leaf guitarist Carter Gravatt, Keller Williams and Decemberists keyboardist Jenny Conlee. The result is a folky, funky, and highly literate take on modern pop, with instrumental wizardry balanced by quirky lyrics and a dynamic energy that carries the album to greater heights than the sum of its parts.
