The Allman Brothers Band

Music Reviews The Allman Brothers Band
The Allman Brothers Band

Though it lacks the polish, majestic dynamic peaks and subtle beauty of the legendary Live at the Fillmore East, this double-disc recording from July 1970 (released by Epic/Legacy) is crackling with raw, youthful energy. As usual, Duane Allman is a bolt of lightning; an anomaly—a roman candle spouting a hail of sparks so intense he couldn’t help but burn out before his time. The songs are the same ones you’ve heard before, but with this runaway freight train of a rock band, it doesn’t matter. To borrow a phrase from Gregg Allman—the music’ll hit you “like a sack of hoe handles.”
