The Indicators – Kill The Messenger

With their sophomore effort, The Indicators skid through the grease spot in the middle of the garage rock “revival,” tipping their hat to the likes of Son Volt, The Replacements and the MC5 along the way. Following up 2001’s Beauty is a Whore with another helping of guitar-driven, smoky southern howls, these Atlanta natives are cranky and iconoclastic, which is fine with me. There’s a melodic core and a surprising literate bent to strummy rockers like “I Guess By Now” and “Eye Spy,” while the focused cacophony of tunes like “I Got a Line on You” and “Satellite” lay bare the hidden connections between Johnny Reb and Johnny Rotten. As the Drive-By Truckers have shown, there was always more punk in Skynyrd than most folks wanted to admit, and The Indicators are further proof that this musical discovery may be the most significant in recent memory.
