The Knick’s second season won’t air until October, but fans can relive the guts and glory of the first season with the Blu-ray set that hit stores Tuesday. Cinemax series The Knick may be a period medical drama set in the early 1900’s, but its soundtrack is anything but antiquated.
Cliff Martinez, composer of the show, had the difficult task of designing a techno-based musical score that fit the edgy spirit of a show that takes place in a time where nothing like his soundtrack existed. Martinez spoke about his scoring techniques exclusively in a special feature on The Knick’s season one Barnes & Noble Blu-ray, in which he revealed the modern-music influences that went into creating The Knick’s unique sound (Spoiler: Spring Breakers, a film that is perhaps the exact opposite of a 1900’s medical drama, was a source of inspiration).
