Celebrate Keith Richards’ 75th Birthday With This Rolling Stones Concert, Taped on This Day in 1981

On this day in 1943, Keith Richards—guitarist for and founding member of The Rolling Stones—was born.

Also on this day—but in 1981—Richards and co. performed a show at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Va., one of the last shows of the Stones’ tour supporting Tattoo You, which arrived in August of that year. This particular performance, a relatively long one clocking in around two hours, was packed with classics: They kicked off the show with “Under My Thumb,” from their 1966 album Aftermath, followed by a slew of hits, including those from Some Girls and Between The Buttons. “Beast Of Burden” was on the lineup, as was ”(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and “Start Me Up.”

This set is 22-songs-long, and every minute is gripping. Here’s an excerpt from Wolfgangs’ liner notes detailing the show:

The band is in fine form, and Jagger leads a rousing sing-along during “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” and injects humor when he informs the audience that saxophonist Ernie Watts is no relation to Stones drummer, Charlie Watts. “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” “Time Is on My Side,” “Miss You,” “Honky Tonk Women” and ”(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” which closes out the set, are the best songs and remind us why the Stones are the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band in the world, still crankin’ it out after four decades on the scene.

Indeed, even in 2018, The Rolling Stones are a rock ‘n’ roll powerhouse. And as in 1981, they’re still on tour. Find their 2019 dates here.
