New York City products Shannon Wise and Max Shrager of The Shacks were born in the late ‘90s, but their misty blend of psychedelic soul is rooted in an encyclopedic knowledge of R&B going back decades. Shrager has spent years immersed in the world of Daptone Records, backing late greats Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley through international tours and earning credits on Naomi Shelton records. Together with Wise’s whispery vocals and indie-heroine sonic style, the pair have extended their friendship from a high-school jazz band to a Queens recording studio for their. Since the release of their first single, “Strange Boy,” which they recorded with El Michels Affair, the group has been compared to ‘90s indie icons like Mazzy Star, Jesus and Mary Chain, and Broadcast. Now a quartet, The Shacks have traversed the country supporting the likes of Chicano Batman, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Lee Fields & The Expressions, and Khruangbin.
