Weezer Cover Toto’s “Africa” After All, Responding to Twitter User’s Pleas

This story begins with 14-year-old Weezer fan and Twitter user, and it ends today with the rock band’s cover of Toto’s everlasting song “Africa.”

If this doesn’t strike you as a normal proceeding for Weezer, you’d be right. Several months ago a Twitter account—@WeezerAfrica, who, according to Noisey, is actually a 14-year-old teen named Mary—began trolling the band, begging them to cover Toto’s balmy ‘80s single “Africa.” They responded last week in the most cheeky way possible: by covering another Toto song, “Rosanna.” Now, there’s another chapter to the story: They finally covered “Africa,” and you can listen below.

The video posted by the band directly calls out the trolls, picturing a snapshot of @WeezerAfrica’s tweet reading, “@RiversCuomo it’s about time you blessed the rains down in africa.” Lead singer Cuomo must have taken those words to heart.

On the cover, Weezer offer the same catchy jungle synth you know and love from the original, plus some added electronica and topped off with Weezer’s rock and roll delivery. And in case you were wondering, yes, their rendition is Toto-approved: “Well done @Weezer!” the band tweeted Tuesday.
