Chicago-based country-soul outfit Whitney are back with their strikingly melodic new track and accompanying video, “FTA,” the first glimpse of the band’s forthcoming sophomore album, to be released later this year via Secretly Canadian.
The band’s first release since 2016’s Light Upon the Lake and 2017’s double-sided single “You’ve Got a Woman / Gonna Hurry (As Slow as I Can),” the track is more of an interlude than anything—all dizzying spells of soft, repeated plucking, twangy glides and schmaltzy violins. One line is laconically repeated over and over—”Forever turned around”—as the song swells to an aching end.
Don’t worry—the unmistakable Whitney sound, if you will, is clear and present.
Shot by bassist Josiah Marshall, the track’s accompanying video pieces together warm shots of drooping trees and power lines, set behind a setting sun and the band performing music in an intimate studio.
The band revealed in February that their highly anticipated sophomore album is “100% recorded,” and more recently extended the U.S. leg of their upcoming world tour in May. You can check out the band’s tour itinerary here.
