Worriers’ Lauren Denitzio is a brilliant writer. You could point to Denitzio’s academic credentials—a MFA in Fine Arts from Parsons and a BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design—to prove that. Those especially tuned in the Brooklyn punk scene and feminist circles a few years ago also used Worriers’ 2015 record Imaginary Life, produced by Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace, as proof.
But I learned about Denitzio’s way with words at a monthly reading event in New York City called Words and Guitars. They read alternatingly vulnerable and ferocious poetry with poise, which now makes total sense, as both of those sentiments emerge in Worriers’ new single “Future Me.”
Even over a concoction of classic rock guitar riffs, squealing solos and smashing drums, Denitzio’s vocals sound almost soothing while telling a story about lost love and persistent memories. They annunciate clearly, comparing residual emotions to “phantom limbs,” before attacking and releasing: “Your indecision, your lack of empathy / Should have left, should have settled for lonely.”
Worriers announced today that they’re signing with L.A. punks at SideOneDummy Records and they’re working on a new LP due out later this year. In the meantime, check out “Future Me” below.
