Live Photos: A Day in the Life of Yasmine Hamdan

Beirut-born Yasmine Hamdan carved out new foundations of indie, rock and electronica in the Middle East, before taking on a more global stage after moving to Paris in the mid aughties. Her time in groups Soapkills and Y.A.S. laid a path to her work as a solo artist, starting with her 2012 self-titled album. After playing herself in Jim Jarmusch’s sultry 2014 vampire film, Only Lovers Left Alive, her ubiquity rose and sophomore album Al Jamilat (The Beautiful Ones) confirmed her legacy of soothing vocals layered over synth soundscapes and lulling guitar. Late last month, Hamdan visited Brooklyn to perform at Littlefield in Gowanus—the show was so packed that attendees spilled into the outside street. Paste photographer Julia Drummond spent the day with the artist as she tried on an array of outfits, courtesy designer Amelia Brown, before hitting the stage. Check the gallery above for a glimpse into Hamdan’s visit, as well as the video below for her performance at the Paste offices.
