Young Fathers Announce They’ve Finished New Album, Defy Us to Dance to Lead Single “Lord”

Young Fathers have finished their first album since 2015’s White Men Are Black Men Too, and its lead single is the enthralling “Lord”—listen below.

“We’ve just finished a new album, and it’s about fucking time,” the band said in a statement. “Anyway, here’s a song from it, a song called ‘Lord.’ See youz soon.”

“Lord,” a bold and beautiful first taste of Young Fathers’ new album, sounds like a hymn from a cyberpunk dystopian future. Though driven primarily by pretty piano and choir-like vocals, the track also has a darker, more foreboding underbelly, with harsh synths and menacing guitars used sparingly but effectively. “You can’t dance to it,” Young Fathers tease on the song’s single art, and they’re right—this is more the kind of song that stops you in your tracks.

The Mercury Prize-winning trio have also announced a 2018 run of U.K. headlining shows, with North American dates to follow. Tickets for their U.K. shows go on sale this Friday, Nov. 3.
