Young Fathers Share New Song, “Cocoa Sugar”

Young Fathers have shared “Cocoa Sugar,” a previously unreleased track pulled from the recording sessions of their new album of the same name. “Cocoa Sugar” is the b-side to a remixed version of “Border Girl,” out now via Ninja Tune.

“Cocoa Sugar” captures the bombast and beauty of the album it was left off of—Cocoa Sugar was acclaimed because of the way it so deftly weaved disparate sounds into a shiny pop package. Hip-hop, dub, industrial and alt-R&B are all strands in the helix of Young Fathers, but their ability to synthesize is what sets them apart. “Cocoa Sugar” is a synthesis monster—the opening vocals sound like an island lullaby that somehow ended up on the dance floor moments before the drop, there are tribal drums echoing through big modern-rock choruses, there are choral chants overlaid with chopped-and-screwed phrases. But “Cocoa Sugar” is like Cocoa Sugar in the sense that it all ends up sounding like now more than any individual touchstone.
