About the Author
Seneca was a Roman statesman and philosopher whose writings have been influential for 2000 years. But Seneca was a flawed individual. He became tutor to the future emperor Nero, and was Nero's advisor during the first part of his reign. During this time Seneca amassed a vast fortune due to his position, and at the same time tried to pursue the 'philosophical life'. His contemporaries called him a hypocrite, but his dilemma as a man with ambitions who also wanted to be a man of wisdom give him an almost contemporary aspect. This short excerpt from The Spiritual Teachings of Seneca is a good introduction to the man and his thought.
