Do You Hear What I Hear? Was written by Noel Regney and Gloria Shayne in 1962 as a plea for peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Regney said of the song in an interview with the New York Times ''I am amazed that people can think they know the song -- and not know it is a prayer for peace, but we are so bombarded by sound and our attention spans are so short that we now listen only to catchy beginnings.''
With the divisions caused by the recent US election, the tensions mounting in the pipeline dispute of North Dakota and the horrific violence in the middle east there is plenty of peace to be prayed for. This song should not be used to insulate ourselves from the crises' of the world around us during the holiday season but as a confrontation with the world as it is. I hope we can all spend some time in the next month to not only pray for peace on a large scale, but pray for peace within ourselves, which is where it must begin for any real change to take place.
