Description

Released on September 24th 2021

Following 2019’s album “Pocket Tunes”, this single is the first of upcoming releases in late 2021 and 2022 that will make up Binary Drift’s second album “Mortido”.

According to Mauricio: “Summer Breeze was born out of having memories of the summer, wanting to go back to staring at the sunset not knowing what day it was. I was messing with flamenco chords, and the song kind of wrote itself from beginning to end in about 15 minutes. The opening hook also came to me that afternoon”. Working again with producer Josemi Sánchez, the duo set out to make Summer Breeze the perfect song for “after the summer”. The opening hook features a jazzy trumpet + flute blend, instantly capturing summer nostalgia. Additionally, the song showcases production techniques that combine electronic beats and ambient textures with acoustic guitars -ala French act Air-, as well as 3d synth bass lines reminiscent of the Postal Service and Depeche Mode.

All elements above work in consonance, providing a canvas to Mauricio’s laid-back vocal delivery (similar to Simply Red’s “Fairground”), and to the closing djembe and waves. Summer Breeze has the unique ability to handhold the listener though an imaginary journey of mystic sunsets while being disconnected from everyday life. Mauricio adds about the single’s cover and second album, “Mortido is the opposite of libido, it is defined in psychology as the psychical energy inherent to the death instinct. Radical indeed, yet I believe the term is a reflection of the times, the driving force of this decade. Working closely with photographer Luis Grajera, we drew from the likes of Dave Gahan (Violator), Bowie (Berlin trilogy), and Alex Turner (AM), and under the premise of “less is more” to craft a set of powerful images to reflect on the album concept and to accompany Mortido’s releases”
