Mr. Mooney was written in the early 1990s and was inspired by a 100 car pile up in California. The story revolves around a couple coming home from a night out and getting into a car accident. The girlfriend died and the boyfriend survives. The song explores survivor’s guilt and the boyfriend trying to justify his survival not only to himself but to his girlfriend’s father, Mr. Mooney. At the time I wrote this song, there was a debate whether car manufacturers should provide a passenger as well as a driver airbag.
