Nuela Charles (formerly known as singer-songwriter MANUELA) is a Canadian alternative-soul artist of Swiss and
Kenyan heritage. With the confidence of a seasoned performer Charles put aside
her solo acoustic beginnings and moved forward with a more explosive full band
sound. It’s electronic. It’s dirty. It’s soulful.
Called a “smooth, triumphant, star-in-the-making album of retro soul and R&B
with moody trip-hop and electronica,” by Sandra Sperounes of the Edmonton
Journal, “Aware*” was released
October 23, 2012. It’s the second album for Charles, who toured Canada and
Switzerland in the last year.
“Aware” entered the !earshot Campus National Top 50 chart at a high
of #22 in mid-December 2012 but flew under the radar for the beginning of 2013 until
it was highlighted during the CBC National Searchlight Contest and had CBC producer
Andrea Warner call Charles “the future
queen of Canadian soul.” “Aware”
later went on to be nominated for a 2013 Western Canadian Music Award for “Urban Recording.”
Nuela has been filling venues
across Western Canada and Switzerland and has been the opening act for the
likes of Shad, CLASSIFIED, and Ziggy Marley.
Having just recently won the
Edmonton Music Prize, which highlights a recording that has “made a unique contribution or outstanding
accomplishment in music within the last 18 months,” Nuela has already
kicked off 2014 with multiple TV licensing syncs on networks in the USA and
Canada including, VH1, CityTV and W Network.
SoulTrain named Nuela as “one to watch” for 2014 and with her
recent nomination at the SiriusXM Indies – the 14th Annual
Independent Music Awards, she’s well on her way.
