Our new single Lying is a first for us as a band in many ways. Normally when we begin writing, we draw from actual experiences we've had or something that goes on emotionally that serves a deeper purpose. This time around, we wanted to have a little more fun with it and be lighthearted through it all. So we started writing from a completely fictitious standpoint. The premise of the song is essentially about a guy and a girl who are in love, but due to fear and insecurities, and the fact that he has fallen so hard for her, he has convinced himself that it would be better to end it now than to be devastated later on in case things don't work out. So he begins saying all these things that aren't true to take the edge off the pain of letting her go - as well as to push her away as hard as possible so that she doesn't even want to talk it out because he knows he wont be able to follow through with it if they talk. And she's not buying any of it. It's a totally counter-intuitive mindset and sounds like madness when it's lined out like that in writing. But what I think is even crazier is that it actually happens everyday! People make rash and destructive decisions based off of feelings that may otherwise appear as insanity if it were written out line by line. So on the surface, it's our attempt to become better storytellers. It's also a fun, 80's pop/rock breakup song (which we loved the satire nature of releasing it on Valentines Day). But underneath the surface, it is kind of our unapologetic way of calling ourselves out as humans and as lovers to just cut the crap and be honest with ourselves and the people who matter most to us. Even if that means getting hurt in the process.
