Mike Wojciechowski is Thick Red Wine, and he makes indie folk-punk. With the release of his debut album, “Never Wanted to Be Cool,” his lyrical prowess is clearly on display. As he aptly puts it: Thick Red Wine’s songs are autobiographical, funny, smart and vulnerable. The title track discusses a recess fight he had in the fifth grade, and how important it is to stand up for your friends. It’s a simple lesson we’ve all learned but is still rather hard to always implement, so this song serves as a gentle reminder. Other topics that Wojciechowski touches on throughout the album include a middle school dance erection, Freud and Marquis DeSade, and meeting girls. Running the gamut from the serious to the irreverent, Never Wanted to Be Cool keeps the listener entertained and has a fresh take on the indie folk movement with some kicking punk roots.
